22 Oct Finding Spiritual Healing in 12 Steps

Addiction can be viewed as a spiritual disease and the 12-Step program offers a model for repairing the damaged spirit. In this way, the person suffering from addiction receives strength and relief from their illness as they work through the steps. Originating in Alcoholics Anonymous, the 12-Step program can be applied to any type of addiction with great success. Therapia has adopted this model as an integral part of our treatment for alcohol and drug addiction.

The 12 Steps have been proven to be the most effective method to achieve long-term sobriety from drug and alcohol addiction. They began as the Four Absolutes used by the Oxford Groups in the 1930’s, and in 1935 were expanded by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith to the steps that have helped millions overcome addiction and enrich their lives.

The 12 Steps are a process that individuals go through to overcome their dependency on alcohol and drugs by relying on a higher power. The steps are:

Admit we are powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.
Come to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understand Him.
Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Admit to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
Be entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
Humbly ask Him to remove our shortcomings.
Make a list of all persons we had harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.
Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Continue to take personal inventory and promptly admit when we are wrong.
Seek through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we know Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we try to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Turning one’s life over to a higher power and finding strength there can help those dealing with addiction find the help they need to heal their spirit as well as their body and mind. This is an integral part of overcoming addiction that clients begin as part of their treatment at Therapia.
