Psychological Evaluation: What to Expect

psych evaluationHere at Therápia, we strive to give each of our clients the best possible chance at a full rehabilitation. This is why we perform a free assessment either in person or by phone with every potential client. During this assessment, which takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, we will explore the client’s complete addiction history as well as what effects addiction might have had on the individual’s family, relationships, employment, legal standing, spirituality, etc. These are all part of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) assessment criteria, and a DSM IV diagnosis will be made according to the Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This assessment process is vital to determining what level of treatment—and which approaches to treatment—are best for the client.

Once a client begins treatment with us, we will perform psychological testing and an evaluation as appropriate, as part of our individual therapy services. In psychological testing, a psychologist will use a diverse set of formal tests such as questionnaires, checklists, and verbal interviews to more deeply assess an individual’s psychological health. A psychologist will look at unique behaviors, personality attributes, and the present state of a client’s functioning, all of which might affect the addiction recovery process.

Psychological testing and evaluations are invaluable in the world of addiction and behavioral health treatment. A comprehensive psychological evaluation will help psychologists and counselors unveil any coexisting disorders, as well as develop a treatment plan that is tailored to the client. Professionals can also use the information gathered in a psychological evaluation to better understand where the client is coming from, and what strengths and weaknesses the client might be facing in recovery. Undergoing a psychological evaluation can truly only be advantageous to your recovery.

The path to recovery starts with a phone call. If you would like to schedule an assessment, call 1-888-917-3422 today. To learn more about our introductory assessment services, click here.
